The good news is the ColorChlor and TechniChlor brands of Spa Chlorinators work with sodium chlorine and sodium bromide. If you have a ColorChlor or TechniChlor and don’t want to use chlorine then you can use sodium bromide as the salt and make your own bromine to keep your spa or hot tub water clear and safe.
When using sodium bromide and a bromine generator you will have the same benefits of a reduction in hot tub and spa maintenance as you get with a chlorine generator. Spend more of your leisure time in your spa instead of maintaining and taking care of it. With a bromine generator you will not need to transport, store, buy or load a feeder, say good buy to your spa bromine floater.
When conventional chlorine or bromine oxidize (burn up) an organic particle they turn into a chloramine or bromamine which are useless by-products and can cause a strong odor. With chlorine generators and bromine generators these by-products are converted back into salt and bromamines or chloramines are not created leaving your spa or hot tub clear and smelling the way it should. If you need to shock the water use a chlorine free shock treatment.
The desired sodium bromide concentration for the ColorChlor and TechniChlor is 2000 PPM. Add 1.5 pounds of sodium bromide per 100 gallons to reach this concentration. When the dissolved bromide ions pass between the brominator plates they are converted into free bromine before reverting back to sodium bromide. You only need to add more sodium bromide when water is splashed out or you refill the spa.
The ColorChlor and TechniChlor do not require the spa or hot tub circulation system to be on and in fact have no connection to the existing spa equipment. They simply plug into a GFI protected 110 VAC outlet and drape over the side of the spa into the water. Bromine generators that are plumbed into the existing equipment may require you to run your spa pump longer to sustain the proper bromine level which can increase your energy bill.
